The United States Blind Golf Association (USBGA) is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization established in 1953 to promote the game of golf to blind individuals. In an effort to serve a larger part of the “blind community”, the USBGA opened up its membership to include vision impaired golfers in 2000. Presently the USBGA has over 100 active members, with about equal numbers of blind and vision impaired players. We compete in three separate divisions and all use the aid of a sighted coach. The USBGA is organized and operated to provide programs that advance, and increase public awareness of, golf among the blind and vision impaired throughout the United States. In April, 2002 the USBGA and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) formed a grant partnership for a three year period. During each year of This initial grant, one national and 2-3 regional championships were funded, as well as helping to support the USBGA junior golf program. Fortunately, the LCIF-USBGA Grant Partnership was renewed for two more years starting in 2005. During the past four years, the USBGA has been able to concentrate on our junior golf program. Sight impaired kids have been the beneficiaries of the program. The number and quality of the clinics and multiple-session programs has increased from four in 2002, to nine in 2003, To thirteen in 2004, to nineteen in 2005, and twenty planned for 2006. The number of participants in the program has increased from 198 in 2002, to 272 in 2003, to 354 in 2004, to 486 in 2005, and we are planning for over 500 in 2006. In 2006, our junior golf program is expecting to introduce students from nine blind schools, five different vision programs, three blind centers, and two Lions summer camps from seventeen states to golf. The above numbers only include the student participants, but there have been thousands of parents, teachers, golf professionals, Lions volunteers, and the general public that have been involved over the past four years, and will continue to help with the 2006 USBGA junior golf program. The growth of our golf program will continue to be the primary focus of the USBGA in the future and help spread our motto … “You don’t have to see it, to tee it!”
